About The Compound Engine
Hi — I'm Matt Cooper. I'm not a financial adviser, a fund manager, or a guru. I'm a private investor who remembers exactly how confusing it felt to start: the jargon, the conflicting advice, the quiet fear of pressing the buy button for the first time.
This site is the guide I wish I'd had. I document what I actually do with my own money — the ETFs I hold, the automated deposits I make, the fees I pay, with real screenshots from my own Trading 212 account — and explain the ideas behind it in plain English.
Why "The Compound Engine"?
Compound engines were the Victorian breakthrough that made steam power efficient — the same steam, used twice, doing more work. That's investing done well: the same money working, then its returns working too. Build the engine once, keep feeding it, let it run.
The rules this site follows
- Education, never advice. I share what I do and how things work — never what you should buy.
- Experience over theory. If I write about a platform or fund, I use it or hold it.
- Disclosure, always. Any referral link is flagged before you reach it.
- Honesty about risk. Markets fall. Capital is at risk. No post will pretend otherwise.
- Dated and maintained. Every post shows when it was published and last updated; money-sensitive posts get reviewed regularly.
